Embedded between mature trees overlooking rice field farmers and Mt Agung, Rumah Harumi is the family home of a young family.

James and Helena requested a home that felt grounded in nature and built primarily from wood — warm, tactile, and alive. From the outset, the intent was to create a house that felt deeply rooted in its setting — preserving as many trees as possible and allowing the architecture to sit naturally within the landscape. The result is a quiet balance between structure and nature, openness and shelter.

The making of Rumah Harumi brought together an extraordinary community of Indonesian artisans — master woodworkers, stone carvers, ceramicists, furniture makers and artists — whose skills shaped every surface and detail. The result is a home that celebrates Bali’s deep tradition of craftsmanship and its intimate relationship with natural materials.

The selected teak & Ulin wood is all reclaimed from old structures, bridges, and abandoned dwellings. Wood that is extraordinary in size and rare to find. Every panel was thoughtfully drawn and considered before installation.

A defining architecture feature is a series of oversized laminate teak louvres designed to provide privacy and protection from the tropical climate while maintaining a sense of lightness and permeability.

A notable Interior element is individually hand made ceramic tiles made locally in Ubud. These tiles were produced with care over 8 months and delivered box by box to site.

The process was as much about patience and collaboration as it was about design: a journey of problem-solving, creativity, and kindness. The finished house carries that spirit — it feels soulful, joyful, and deeply connected to the energy and appreciation of its owners.

Here, daily life unfolds in close connection with nature and one another — a calm, tactile refuge that feels both timeless and alive. Like it always belonged; an interior & architecture that will age gracefully over time.
